Victoria has a Parliamentary inquiry currently running into "cults and high control groups", which is looking at introducing Coercive Control laws in respect to religions or groups. (Call a religious group a cult and you get round freedom of religion). It seems to me the inquiry follows the mantra of me too and believe all victims, whereas sociologists of religion note that while some people just leave and move on, some former members for various reasons flip from support to becoming implacable opponents. The groups being focussed on are pentalcostal churches and Jehovah's witnesses, even a Catholic nunnery, as well as a controversial new Korean group. There has been a long history of religious persecution and prejudice, even the term "cult" is widely recognised as pejorative as has come up in public hearings, yet the inquiry continues to use the term. Coercive Control laws have a flaw which is the same behaviours occur frequently in loving consensual relationships. And bodies such as the Australian Christian Lobby have expressed concern that "coercive" behaviours listed for "cults" also describe mainstream Christian practices. The Inquiry has also hear evidence that "coercive control" exists in yoga groups, and various businesses. If these laws are introduced, and considering its Victoria its a possibility, everyone will be at risk of government interference in groups as a result of emotive complaints by ex members. My ex wife is a massive contributor to coercive control. She constantly uses the kids as tool against by not following court orders and recently at my daughters year 10 formal using my daughter to contact me to say I’m not allowed to go and if I do the photographer-who is the ex wife’s step sister has refused to do it and if she doesn’t go then the ex wife won’t go either. How do I stop her doing this kind of thing without upsetting the kids
Exactly the same happened to our son. He was told he could not go to the end of year service in the church. He had been the parent that religion, and the reason the son went to that school. Another parent told him he’d get a photo for him. But these things really allow the parent winning to “shine”. He stopped being in contact after that.
In the first instance I suggest that this situation be run past your Solicitor. If your daughter is in year 10 she will be over 18 shortly and at that age she should be able to independently make her own decisions - I did state "should be".
Maybe you should go anyway (subject to the above) because it appears that you will be the only family member to fly the flag for your daughter. If your ex wife's sister, the photographer, will not go either it would appear that she does not have permission to film at the formal anyway, or if she does then their combined non-attendance will make them both look rather foolish.
If the formal is conducted via the school then the school principal should be in the loop no matter what occurs and you should get his permission to take the photographs instead. All issues such as this should be recorded for future reference in the event of any disputes that may arise in future. You might also consider taking a friend as a witness should things go awry.
